For example you have database of late night shops (including addresses with post codes) and you want to find nearest shops from your house within 10 miles radius – no problem – that’s where this database comes in. Another wide used example is dating Websites, where you can search for persons within certain radius.

No, database contains only post codes (in php md5) and their longitude/latitude values.
